Halloween hazards: 3 safety tips for a ghoulish good time

Halloween is creeping up! Whether you’re handing out goodies or guiding trick-or-treaters around the neighborhood, keep these spook-tacular tips in mind so everyone can have a safe and enjoyable night.

"Witch" way to safety?

Halloween is one of the most dangerous days of the year for kids walking around outside. One 2018 study found the risk of pedestrian fatalities was 43 percent higher on Halloween compared with other evenings.

For parents: Help your little goblins and ghouls stay visible in the dark by using glow-in-the-dark accessories or reflective tape on costumes. Remind them to look both ways before crossing the street and pay attention to their surroundings.

Don’t be afraid of the dark—you won’t see any witches flying across the moon this year! With Halloween falling on a new moon, the sky will be completely moonless, adding an extra eerie vibe to the night. Without moonlight, consider adding a flashlight to your kid’s costume.

For treat-givers: Make sure your porch and walkway are well lit and remove any obstacles such as power cords or decorations to help prevent any trips or falls.

No tricks, just treats

For parents: Before your trick-or-treaters dig into their candy stash, inspect for any potential dangers like torn packaging.

For treat-givers: If you’re handing out candy, choose options that are individually wrapped and safe for all, like nut-free or gluten-free varieties.

Include non-food goodies like glow sticks, stickers or bubbles for those who may have food allergies or dietary restrictions. A Teal Pumpkin on your porch signals a safe stop for kids with allergies.

Don’t let bugs cause a fright

For parents: Halloween in South Carolina is usually on the warm side. Don’t let your trick-or-treaters get spooked by pesky bites—keep mosquitoes and other bugs at bay with bug spray.

For treat-givers: Consider lighting citronella candles or putting bug zappers near your porch, or wherever you’ll be handing out treats.

With these tips in mind, you can have a hauntingly good time this Halloween.
