Robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery supports less pain and faster recovery

Robotic-assisted technology at Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital may help patients who undergo knee replacement surgery experience less pain and a speedier recovery.

Dr. Christian Eccles, a fellowship-trained hip and knee replacement surgeon at Tidelands Health Orthopedics, said the advanced technology can help patients get back to the activities they love more quickly.

The robotic navigation system puts advanced tools in a surgeon’s skilled hands. Dr. Eccles uses the technology’s robotic arm and a personalized plan based on each patient’s unique anatomy to perform the surgery. The technology’s navigation screen helps the surgeon visualize what will happen prior to removing damaged bone to optimize knee function and balance.

With the aid of the robotic system, Dr. Eccles can make precise changes to the patient’s surgical plan down to one-half millimeter and one-half degree. Once satisfied, he can execute that surgical plan with the assistance of the technology.

“Patients are typically able to recover more quickly and with less pain than we see in traditional knee replacement surgery,” Dr. Eccles said. “Additionally, this technology can allow for a more accurate placement of the knee implant, leading to more natural movement and better joint functionality and longevity, ultimately improving the patient’s overall quality of life.”

At Tidelands Health, robotic-assisted surgery is available for a variety of procedures, including gallbladder, hernia and colon surgery, as well as urological and gynecological procedures such as hysterectomy.

The expansion of robotic-assisted surgery is part of Tidelands Health’s commitment to meet the health care needs of patients across the fast-growing Grand Strand by offering advanced care and leading technology close to home.

Dr. Christian Eccles is a fellowship-trained and board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgeries at Tidelands Health Orthopedics at Georgetown. Dr. Eccles is fluent in English and Spanish.
